Advancing Animal Welfare Solutions in Low- and Middle- Income Countries

Designing for Where Most Animals Live

The majority (likely over 80%) of all farmed vertebrates live in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), yet effective animal welfare interventions for these contexts remain scarce. Most interventions originate in high-income countries and fail to account for LMIC realities: fragmented supply chains, informal markets, weak enforcement.

We need programs designed from the ground up for these contexts — rigorously tested, practically viable, and built to scale. The Centre for Animal Life and Farming (CALF) aims to meet this need.

Grounding Our Research in the Field

CALF is a think-tank developing evidence-based animal welfare programs for Low- and Middle-Income Countries, starting with India.

We conduct field research and pilot testing, drawing inspiration from proven templates from agricultural development (used in sectors like sustainability, antimicrobial resistance, and poverty alleviation), adapting them for animal welfare.

We work closely with implementation partners through the research process. When a program meets our criteria for cost-effectiveness and scalability, we work with them to bring it to scale.
