An estimated 80%* of all farmed vertebrates live in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), yet effective animal welfare interventions for these contexts remain scarce. Many current interventions are imported and don't account for how things actually work in LMICs: informal markets, fragmented supply chains, and weak enforcement.

The Centre for Animal Life and Farming (CALF) exists to expand intervention portfolios. using the One Health approach as animal welfare, human livelihoods, and environmental health are one connected system.

Grounded Research
CALF is a think-and-do tank. We build evidence-based animal welfare programs for LMICs, starting with India. We take a One Health approach, treating animal, human, and environmental health as interdependent.
We conduct field research and pilot testing, borrowing proven methods from development work and optimizing them for animal welfare. For example, there is a mature field for farmer behavior change (agri-dev) that hasn't been tapped yet that CALF is translating to the animal welfare context.
We work closely with implementation partners throughout. When a program proves cost-effective, scalable, and aligned with One Health goals, we help scale it.
